“Is this seat taken?,” I ask an apparently dead lump of flesh mouldering across two. Grunting, the vagrant occupier of both seats shifts over. Not dead then, but as barely alive as anything I’ve ever seen. Brushing the seat to clear any remnants of its previous occupant, I sit.

Nobody’s noticed my homeless friend next to me has stopped breathing. I smile as we approach the first stop.
